I replaced it with my current one, which then passed memtest no problem; ran memtest for over 2 hours. So now I think my memory is fine, but you still could be right. Everything seems fine with W2K, anyway. I'll let you know. Keep us posted. I think I found out what is wrong!
Note especially the "More Information" at the end. None of the work arounds work because there is no BIOS update. I checked. A few things that really bug me about this whole experience: -I posted this same question on a MS newgroup and never got one single response.
I wasn't even going to buy it, but did to solve an earlier problem I haven't told you the half of the problems I've had with this project! Question now is do I just stay with W2K?
Either way, I have to spend money I didn't want to on this one, and am stuck with hardware that is redundant. I think I've ranted enough. Thanks for listening. Seems like you're between a rock and a hard place. You would think there should be a BIOS update out there somewhere.

But yes your only option is to underclock. Then I'm certain it will work. I turned down the clock, also disabled antivirus and firewall. No good. I used another disk and get to the blue screen that says "setup is starting windows" and thats as far as its goes.
Im thinking there is some conflict with Its a known issue but I havent been able to find it in knowledge base again. Er yea i had a similar problem which i couldn't seem to fix:dead: , anyway im not sure which setting worked, but i Loaded Failsafe Defaults in BIOS and everything worked fine first time! Just an idea Cucumber.
Do you have "plug and play Os installed?? If so, turn it to no and try again, clean install. I found an article in MS knowledge base. Its an Award and the directions are confusing.
Originally posted by vegasgmc Im running and 98 and Im trying to install XP Pro on a blank partition. Im trying to do a clean install on a seperate partition. Ive tried 2 different disks, doing it through the other OS's and booting from the cd. Ive never put XP on this computer. Maybe I'll just wait and put it on the new one Im building. One is "Repair your computer", and the other one is "What to know before installing Windows".
Click on the first one: "Repair your computer". Windows will then try to find the installation directory for Vista or Windows 7, depending on what you have. Next up is a screen with a box called Recovery Options. Click the first option, Startup Repair. You'll see a Startup Repair box with the message "Startup Repair is checking your system for problems…". When it's done, it will prompt you to reboot. If there is more than one problem it may reboot again to continue repairing. At this time, you can plug out the DVD, restart your computer and everything should be working normally.
Then you'll find that you can boot your laptop up successfully. Generally rated 4. There are two ways for you to fix this XP black screen error.
